One of our recent projects on Goulburn Street in Sydney’s CBD perfectly showcased our ability to manage complex logistics, stringent safety protocols, and technical challenges—while keeping everything on schedule.

The Project Brief

Our client needed to install a new rooftop on a high-profile commercial building. Their top priority was to create a safe work zone for the trades involved, with minimal disruption to the building or surrounding streets. However, several factors made this a particularly demanding project:

  • The rooftop had a hob around the perimeter, measuring only 800mm high – well below the required height for compliant edge protection under AS/NZS 4994.1:2009.
  • The building contained sensitive and confidential information, requiring stringent security screening for all personnel and daily security procedures.
  • The city location posed additional constraints including tight access, street closures, and limited timeframes for lifting equipment to the roof.

The Challenge

1. Safety Compliance
The existing hob was insufficient for meeting the national safety standards, which require:

  • A handrail height between 950mm and 1050mm
  • A mid-rail height between 450mm and 550mm

This meant we needed a custom solution that would sit above the hob and fully comply with edge protection regulations.

2. Strict Security Protocols
Due to the sensitive nature of the building’s operations, our personnel underwent comprehensive background checks before accessing the site. Daily procedures included metal detector scans and strict tool and equipment controls to maintain site security at all times.

3. Logistics of a Single Crane Lift
Working in the CBD meant we could only perform one night-time lift using a 400-tonne mobile crane to get all required equipment onto the roof. Every detail – from the selection of the parapet clamp system to the layout and quantity of materials – had to be meticulously planned. There was no room for error: no second lift, no forgotten components, and no delays.

This same process was repeated for the >removal of equipment – one final crane lift to bring everything back down safely after the system was dismantled.

4. Live Edges and Tool Safety
During installation, workers operated near live edges before the protection was fully in place. As a result, all tools and equipment had to be tethered at all times to prevent accidental drops and ensure complete safety for both workers and pedestrians below.

Our Solution: Non-Invasive Parapet Clamp System

To meet the project’s unique demands, we proposed our non-invasive parapet clamp system. This system clamps securely onto the existing hob, allowing us to install a compliant handrail and mid-rail without penetrating the roof structure or damaging the waterproofing membrane.
