The Project: Forest Lodge Remedial Works
This recent project in Forest Lodge, NSW involved a remedial contractor carrying out balcony upgrades, including:
- Removal and refit of balcony screens/fencing
- Works to the face of the slab edge
- Tight access conditions with limited fixing options
The key challenge here was that fixing to the slab face was not possible, which is often the go-to method for edge protection. This meant we had to think differently and utilise a system that could still provide full compliance while allowing the builder to carry out their works efficiently.
The Solution – Underslung Bracket System
To overcome this, we utilised a combination of:
- EBC Commercial Bracket
- EBCMB Multi Bracket
Installed in an underslung configuration
This pairing allowed us to:
- Fix directly into the underside of the slab
- Set the exact stand-off distance required to safely carry out works to the slab face
- Maintain full compliance with Australian Standards
The versatility of the multi bracket is a standout—it can be used in:
- Underslung applications (as per this project)
- Top-fixed installations
- Side-fixed configurations
This flexibility is one of the key reasons we rely on it across so many different job types.
Safe Installation Methodology
Due to the design of the existing balcony screening – specifically the gaps large enough for hands and power tools – our team was able to install the system:
- From both above and below the balcony
- While remaining behind the existing screening at all times
This approach meant:
- No exposure to unprotected edges
- No requirement for fall arrest or restraint systems during installation
- A safer, more efficient setup for our installers
It’s a great example of how the right system, combined with smart planning, can eliminate risk altogether rather than just control it.
Safety First – Hierarchy of Control & SWMS
Every project we undertake is backed by a comprehensive risk assessment and Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS). A key part of this process is applying the Hierarchy of Control, which is the foundation of effective safety planning.
In simple terms, the hierarchy ranks risk controls from most effective to least:
- Elimination – Remove the hazard completely
- Substitution – Replace with a safer alternative
- Engineering Controls – Isolate people from the hazard (e.g. edge protection systems)
- Administrative Controls – Procedures, training, signage
- PPE – Harnesses, helmets, etc. (last line of defence)
On this project, by using the underslung edge protection system, we were able to apply an engineering control that effectively removed the need for reliance on PPE such as harnesses.
This is always our goal – design out the risk wherever possible, rather than simply managing it.
