Replacing a roof on a heritage building requires careful planning. Temporary safety systems need to protect workers while also protecting the existing structure from unnecessary damage. Edge Protection Hire was engaged to provide temporary edge protection and a stretcher stair system for roof replacement works at the Stolen Generations building in Parramatta. The project required a practical fall protection solution that could be installed without compromising the heritage fabric of the building.

Heritage-Friendly Edge Protection

Heritage buildings can present unique challenges when installing temporary safety systems. Traditional edge protection systems may require drilling, anchoring or fixing into existing structural elements, which may not be permitted on a heritage property.

For this project, our team installed a non-invasive Pole-Up Edge Protection System. The system uses pressure and geometry rather than permanent fixings into the building, providing effective temporary roof edge protection while minimising impact on the existing structure. This was an important consideration for the project and allowed the required roof safety system to be installed while meeting the heritage requirements.

Temporary Edge Protection for Roof Replacement

The edge protection provided a secure barrier around the roof perimeter, allowing roofing contractors to carry out the replacement works with appropriate fall protection in place. The system was designed around the requirements of the building and the specific challenges presented by the heritage structure.

For heritage roof replacement projects, temporary edge protection needs to be considered early in the planning process to ensure the system is compatible with both the building and the works being undertaken.

Stretcher Stair System for Emergency Access

In addition to the edge protection, a temporary stretcher stair system was installed to provide emergency access from the roof.

The scaffold-based stair system provided a dedicated route for safely evacuating an injured worker from the roof if required. Providing appropriate emergency access is an important consideration when planning roof works, particularly on larger or occupied sites.

Working Around an Occupied Heritage Building

The surrounding buildings remained operational throughout the project, requiring careful coordination between the construction team, building management and other stakeholders.

Temporary works had to be planned around:

• Pedestrian access
• Building operations
• Material deliveries
• Installation and removal
• Noise and disruption
• Worker and public safety

The project required a temporary safety solution that worked effectively without unnecessarily impacting the surrounding building operations.

A Practical Temporary Works Solution

The combination of non-invasive edge protection and a temporary stretcher stair system provided the project with the roof safety and emergency access required for the works. The project was completed successfully, and the client has since continued to engage our team for additional works.
